Cutesy Evil Dead Game Headed to iOS

The original Evil Dead movies are horror classics, but attempts to turn the films into games haven't fared as well. While movie-to-game adaptations have a generally low success rate, Evil Dead's Ash seems like the perfect video game hero. He's ready for action with a chainsaw for an arm and a trusty boomstick. On top of that, he fights the undead.

It's a recipe that should have worked by now, so you can't get too mad at anyone willing to give it another shot. Developer Trigger Apps is bringing us Evil Dead App, an iOS game that inserts Ash into an action-packed, portable shooter.

The footage shown so far features a strangely cutesy style, a polar opposite from the dark, graphic theme of the movies. That doesn't mean the developer is shying away from the gore, though. The end product resembles Conker's Bad Fur Day as much as it does The Evil Dead.

The game is apparently getting the full blessing of series' creators Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert. "Sam, Bruce and I have always been interested in finding ways to bring our 1980's Evil Dead into the digital age," said Tapert in a statement to the Hollywood Reporter. "And taking this first step with Trigger has been a great experience."

The game will be out in the coming weeks (it's currently in the approval stages). The iPhone/iPod versions will sell for $2.99 and the iPad version for $4.99.
