Cthulhu Developer Not a Fan of XBLIG
It's no secret that Xbox Live Indie Games is a flawed service. After all, there's little to no promotion, good games are difficult to find, the sorting is abysmal, and it literally seems like another version of the App Store. The game features a massive library of independently developed titles, but due to all of these issues, the good games are incredibly difficult to separate from the bad.
Talking to Edge, Cthulhu Saves the World developer Robert Boyd expressed his sentiments toward the service. "XBLIG is a great solution for new developers," stated Boyd. "It's cheap, easy to learn, and has a great community of people that are willing to help each other. However, from a perspective of actually making good money, I do not believe it is a viable platform."
According to the Zeboyd Games designer and programmer, XBLIG is far too open to suit the needs of upstart developers, ultimately causing a problem for individuals who want to get their games and their names out there to the public. "XBLIG basically has the low price expectations and flood of product that the Apple App Store has, combined with the low visibility of Nintendo's digital stores--it's no wonder most titles sell poorly," stated Boyd. "Greater visibility for the high-quality titles on the service would be a great help."
Boyd definitely made some strong statements here, but it's impossible to disagree. Statistics don't lie, and after seeing how well Cthulhu Saves the World did on Steam during its first week, surpassing its XBLIG sales almost immediately, it's obvious that the Xbox 360 indie service isn't all that credible. At this point, Microsoft probably won't do much to remedy this issue, just like Nintendo hasn't done anything to remedy its WiiWare problem. Hopefully, however, developers use the platform much like Zeboyd did: as a stepping stone to get to a stronger digital service like Steam.
