Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Leads Game Industry in Sales for November
NPD has just released its November U.S. sales data and Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the winner. Modern Warfare 3 beat out other popular titles like Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Battlefield 3, and Assassin's Creed: Revelations to claim the top spot.
Given Modern Warfare 3's record-breaking sales at launch, this is hardly surprising. MW3's five-day worldwide sales of $775 million shattered the previous record set by Call of Duty: Black Ops.
Despite Modern Warfare 3's records, the overall gaming industry stayed relatively even at $3 billion compared to last November's $2.99 billion.
Despite big Black Friday sales from hardware companies, hardware sales were actually down 9% to $982.4 million while software grew 15% to $1.67 billion. This can be attributed to blockbuster titles like Skyrim, Battlefield 3, and, of course, Modern Warfare 3.
"Overall, the new physical portion of industry sales was essentially flat versus last November. While content sales grew substantially thanks to a great slate of new content, a decline in average retail price in all categories with the exception of portable hardware resulted in flat dollar sales even though unit sales grew for console hardware, as well as console, portable, and pc software,” explained NPD analyst Anita Frazier.
The top 10 best-selling games this November include:
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
- Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
- Battlefield 3
- Assassin's Creed: Revelations
- Just Dance 3
- Madden NFL 12
- Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
- Saints Row: The Third
- The Legend of Zelda: Skyrward Sword
- Batman: Arkham City
More information should come out shortly, but several Microsoft employees did hint at a "huge" month in sales.
