3DS Sets Record on Amazon UK as Most Preordered Console Ever
It appears the United Kingdom market is eagerly anticipating the launch of the Nintendo 3DS, as the dual screen handheld has become the most preordered video game console in Amazon UK history. Though clear numbers weren't given, it's been confirmed that preorders of Nintendo's upcoming handheld have surpassed those of the PlayStation 3, Wii, and DSi by 20 percent, 56 percent, and a whopping 255 percent, respectively. The 3DS now stands tall above PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360 Kinect, and PlayStation Move on Amazon's list of top five pre-ordered gaming consoles and hardware.
Chris Poad, director of video games at Amazon UK, expressed his surprise at the high pre-order rate and mentioned buzz like this was usually the norm for home consoles only. "It's a unusual for a handheld console to attract this amount of excitement in the run up to launch," said Poad. "Such high levels of interest are normally reserved for the play-at-home hardware like the the ground-breaking Nintendo Wii and last year's Microsoft Kinect."
Despite his initial surprise, Poad stated that the excitement over the console makes sense in today's market, which is slowly but surely incorporating 3D gaming into the mix. After all, if you want to play games in 3D you need to wear special glasses, and the 3DS does away with that practice by offering stereoscopic visuals without the use of anything other than your eyes. "Nintendo 3DS is launching at a time when interest in all things 3D is incredibly high and with the promise of real 3D graphics without glasses, it's a real breakthrough in handheld video game entertainment," continued Poad.
The frenzy surrounding the 3DS is certainly justified, for the handheld offers yet another level of innovation from Nintendo. I may not be a big fan of the launch line-up, and although I'm put off by the weak battery life of the system, I'm looking forward to picking up Nintendo's next portable gaming system somewhere down the line. I just hope the inevitable release of the 3DS Lite comes soon after the initial launch.
