gamescom 2014: PlayStation TV hits North America October 14

Sony today announced, during its gamescom press conference, that they will be bringing the smallest addition to the PlayStation family, PlayStation TV, overseas to the entire PAL region October 14.

PlayStation TV is a micro-console aimed primarily at streamed content, PlayStation 1 games and PS Vita games. The system boasts a large digital library and compatibility with all Vita games, and is controlled by the PS3’s DualShock 3 controller.

The little system, then known as Vita TV, was revealed near the end of 2013 just before the Tokyo Games Show and was, at the time, only confirmed for a Japanese release. However, Vita TV never found a strong foothold in Japan and has continued to yield crawling sales. Despite this, there was considerable demand for the product from Western consumers, so it comes as no surprise that Sony is looking to broaden PlayStation TV’s horizons.

Sony first hinted at a western localization earlier this year, but has only nailed a hard date today. Interestingly, the product has been renamed for its PAL release as well, perhaps in an effort to better promote brand recognition and to distinguish it from the regular Vita.
