Rumor: Forget Halo 2 Anniversary, Halo: The Master Chief Collection is coming to Xbox One this year

While we'll have to wait until 2015 to play Halo 5: Guardians, Xbox One owners will reportedly be able to catch up on Master Chief's adventures this year with the release of Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

According to an Engadget source (though we've also heard similar rumors), the collection will feature HD remakes of Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, and Halo 4. The collection is said to focus on Master Chief to "refresh audience's memories ahead of Halo 5's release."

At this point, specifics like the game's developer, distribution plans, resolution and frame-rate are all still unknown; but, with E3 right around the corner, and Microsoft promising Halo news at their Xbox Media Briefing, I suspect we'll get an official reveal there. Though we were originally told to expect Halo 2 Anniversary this year, Microsoft did hint at a collection of this magnitude earlier today.

"Many fans noted that I was very deliberate with my phrasing on stage at E3 last year. I spoke about a “journey,” rather than a destination – and that journey definitely begins in 2014 with a giant leap, rather than one small step," 343 Industires General Manager Bonnie Ross teased. "We’ll give you much more information about our plans for this year at the Xbox E3 2014 Media Briefing on June 9, and we’re confident that “Halo” fans will be pretty excited about the special plans we have in store."

As a reminder, Microsoft hasn't yet announced this, so treat it as nothing more than a rumor. Having said that, we, too, have heard similar rumors so I'm thinking there is some legitimacy here.
