Microsoft today announced the results for the third quarter of fiscal year 2014, revealing that 1.2 million Xbox One consoles were shipped.

Microsoft confirmed that during the quarter, ended March 31, 2014, 2 million Xbox consoles were sold in, "including 1.2 million Xbox One consoles." It's important to remember, however, that this number represents the number shipped to retailers and not necessarily sold to consumers.

The Xbox platform revenue increased by 45 percent, contributing an overall increase of 41 percent in revenue for the Devices and Consumer Hardware division. Gross margin decreased by 34 percent however, due to "growth in console sales with the launch of Xbox One." Revenue generated from transactions through Xbox LIVE increased by 17 percent for the Devices and Consumer Other division.

Revenue for the entire Devices and Consumer division -- which includes sales of Windows (including all OEM licensing), Xbox, Windows Phone and Windows Store, among other things --  grew 12 percent to $8.30 billion. Overall, Microsoft announced revenue of $20.40 billion for the quarter with gross margin, operating income, and net income of $14.46 billion, $6.97 billion, and $5.66 billion, respectively.

Last week, Microsoft revealed that it has shipped over five million units since its launch in November. 311,000 Xbox One units were sold in the United States during the month of March. Comparatively, PS4 worldwide sales (to actual consumers) have topped 7 million units.
