The functionality of the Super Mario 3D Land stage in the Nintendo 3DS version of the upcoming Super Smash Bros. has been explained by game director Masahiro Sakurai. Like the Rainbow Cruise stage from past games, it will be continuously scrolling.

"First it advances by side-scrolling. Then you continue into the valley -- it's in 3D Land, after all. The protruding stone blocks change the angles of the platforms," Sakurai explained on Miiverse. From there, "you get back on the rails to go farther into the stage" on a downhill slope until you get to a giant pipe that takes you back to the beginning. In total, it'll take roughly two minutes to complete a lap.

Super Smash Bros. is due out for both 3DS and Wii U later this year. While both platforms will mostly be the same, there will be some exclusive 3DS and Wii U content, like this stage for example.
