Rogue Legacy creators made back its development costs in one hour

Rogue Legacy has pushed some big numbers for an indie game. The platformer-roguelike sold 100,000 copies in its first week on PC, according to developer Cellar Door Games.

Those sales were "well beyond anything we had ever anticipated," brothers Teddy and Kenny Lee said in a talk at the Game Developers Conference yesterday, as reported by Destructoid.

Of its eight titles, it took Cellar Door an average of $1,000 to make each game. But Rogue Legacy was its biggest, taking $14,878 and a year and a half to develop (compared to its usual development times of a couple days to a few months).

"That's still a lot of money compared to the $1,000 for our previous projects, but if you consider the scope of the game I think we did a pretty good job at keeping the costs down," said Kenny Lee.

The team covered those costs in less than an hour of sales.

Rogue Legacy released in June 2013 for PC and then on Mac and Linux that October. It's due to hit PlayStation 3, PS4, and PS Vita around late summer this year. Cellar Door has no plans to add new content due to the strict timeframe, according to Digital Spy.
