Nintendo: 'No plans' for mini games on smartphones

Looks like Mario on mobile smartphones will have to wait. Nintendo has denied a report from Japanese media corp Nikkei that claimed the company is planning to offer playable "mini games" on smartphones based on its core console titles.

According to the original report, Nintendo is planning to use mobile smartphone devices as a way to familiarize consumers with its games. The company allegedly had plans to release trailers, information, and even free mini games on smartphones that introduce the player to a franchise or title and eventually convince them to purchase the full-fledged console edition on specific Nintendo hardware.

Although Nintendo didn't reject the notion of sharing trailers and game information via smartphones, they did flat out deny the idea of mini games coming to smartphones.

"Nikkei's article contains information previously stated by Mr. Iwata during past press conferences, including statements which relate to Nintendo's willingness to make use of smart devices to promote our products," Nintendo said in a statement to Engadget. "However during such past announcements Mr. Iwata has also stated that Nintendo's intention is not to make Nintendo software available on smart devices and as such, we can confirm that there are no plans to offer mini-games on smartphone devices."

I'm sure we'll hear more on the topic as Nintendo will release its Q3 financial results tomorrow, but for now it's a no-go for smartphones.
