Call of Duty: Ghosts 'on track' to be most pre-ordered game of the year
Any notion that Call of Duty would be dethroned as top dog this year has been squashed by the reveal that Call of Duty: Ghosts is "on track" to be the most pre-ordered title of the year."
In Activision's latest press release, highlighting a pre-order promotion with Eminem and GameStop, the retailer had a brief quote touching on the sales of this year's installment.
"Call of Duty is an entertainment juggernaut and cultural phenomenon. We are excited for the upcoming release of the new installment of this blockbuster franchise, Call of Duty: Ghosts," said Gamestop's VP of merchandising Bob Puzon. "We look forward to celebrating the worldwide November launch of this great game that is on track to be the most pre-ordered title of the year."
Although Ghosts very well may be outpacing all other games in a struggling industry looking for a kick from next-gen consoles, there's still worry that the game won't live up to the success of its predecessor, Black Ops 2. Last month, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg revealed pre-orders for Ghosts were "well below the record-setting pace" of Black Ops 2. He noted, however, that "other key engagement metrics," such as the number of people player per month and per day, the number of DLC sales, and community engagement are all significantly higher than previous years.
So while Ghosts may or may not exceed the success of Black Ops 2, it's clear that Call of Duty remains the crowning jewel of the gaming industry despite all of the talk of "gamer fatigue."
