If you want to play The Elder Scrolls Online on Xbox One you're going to be paying two subscriptions: one for Xbox LIVE Gold and one for the monthly subscription to the game. Bethesda is hoping to remove one of those -- and it isn't theirs. Speaking to OXM, Bethesda's VP of marketing and PR Pete Hines explained the company is "pushing" Microsoft to remove the Xbox LIVE Gold requirement for those who want to play the MMO on the Xbox One.

“We feel like most people such as yourself currently pay that subscription not to pay a game, but to play all games online," Hines said. "So in that sense, when I’m playing Call of Duty online I don’t feel like I’m paying my monthly Xbox Live sub for Call of Duty – I’m just paying it because that’s a thing that I do, and whatever game I’m playing at the time is the one that benefits.

“Having said that, we have been in talks with Microsoft about that very thing, and seeing whether or not there’s any room to change their minds about that, for folks who are only paying The Elder Scrolls Online and don’t want to pay for an Xbox Live Gold subscription, just to pay the Elder Scrolls Online," he explained.

Hines continued, “The answer right now is that’s the way it works, but it’s something that we’re aware of and we keep pushing on, to see if there’s something that can be done. We’ll let you know if there’s movement there.”

As a side note, it's likely that you'll have to pay the PlayStation Plus subscription to play The Elder Scrolls Online on PS4 as well, although Sony has said that certain MMOs on the console won't require a subscription to PS Plus. Xbox LIVE Gold costs $10 a month, or $60 for a year, but you can always find discounts online. Comparatively, PlayStation Plus is $18 for three months, or $50 a year.

Are you willing to pay a subscription to each platform in addition to the $15 a month required by The Elder Scrolls Online?
