God of War director Cory Barlog returns to Sony Santa Monica
Former God of War game director Cory Barlog, who left Sony Santa Monica in 2007, has returned to his roots. Barlog was an animator on the first God of War, helping create the Kratos we all know and love. He then went on to write and direct God of War II, write Got of War: Ghost of Sparta (on the PSP), and even help with pre-production of God of War III before departing from the company to explore other ventures.
In a long-winded message on the PlayStation Blog, Barlog discussed the path that led to his return to Sony Santa Monica while hinting at his next "freaking huge" project, which sadly he is unable to elaborate on.
What am I working on, you ask? Good question. Sadly, I cannot tell you…yet," Barlog wrote. "But I can say that it is freaking huge, and it will live up to the standards that I helped establish here at SMS. We’re putting together a team as I type this, an Ocean’s 11 kind of thing. We are searching the world high and low for the best of the BEST to come and be on the ground floor of this endeavor."
"I have worked in many places, with any number of smart people of all disciplines, notoriety and awesomeness but nowhere have I encountered so many ‘top-of-their-game’ people as I have at Sony," he said.
Sony Santa Monica released God of War: Ascension earlier this year which wasn't a bad game, though it didn't live up to the expectations set forth by its predecessors. The studio is currently working with developer Ready At Dawn on PlayStation 4 exclusive The Order: 1886. Could Sony Santa Monica also be working on its own PS4 title? If they are, I suspect we'll hear about it at Gamescom where Sony has promised the reveal of even more PS4 games.
