Shigeru Miyamoto hints at new a "new franchise" for 2014

If there's one thing I want for the Wii U, it's for Mario and Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto to make a new franchise with new gameplay and new character. Nintendo needs something new and fresh, and it looks like Miyamoto is going to be the one to provide that freshness.

In speaking with Famitsu (and translated by Polygon), Miyamoto was mentioned the Wii U's most recent system update, of which he said:

With the most recent version update the system runs a lot better, and while there will continue to be improvements in the future, I think it's to the point where it's a convenient thing to have in the living room. Of course, these sorts of updates mean nothing if we don't put out games for it, and I hope people are looking forward to the games coming up. We'll have Mario Kart 8 out next spring, and at that point we'll have the whole lineup in place, so I think it's about time we brought out a new franchise. I can't give out details, but that's the title that's been keeping me pretty busy lately."

SAY WHAAAAT?!!!

In January of 2012, Miyamoto first revealed that he was working on an "undisclosed original title." Is this that title? It bothers me a bit that when Mario Kart 8 releases in Spring 2014 Nintendo thinks they'll have their whole lineup in place -- because at that point they'll just be catching up a release library they promised a year earlier -- I am happy that Miyamoto knows they need games to move consoles.

Currently, Miyamoto is working on Pikmin 3, which is due to launch August 4 on the Wii U. And of course, Super Mario 3D World comes out later this year, with Mario Kart 8 following in the spring.
