Leaked review: The Last of Us could be ‘gaming’s Citizen Kane moment’

The global embargo for reviews of Naughty Dog's The Last of Us won't be lifted until early June, but one publication seems to have jumped the gun, posting its review days early. And it sings great praise for the highly anticipated PS3 title.

Empire awarded Naughty Dog's latest game a perfect 5/5, likening it to "gaming's Citizen Kane moment." For those not familiar with film history, Citizen Kane is considered by many to be the greatest film ever made. Is it possible that The Last of Us could be the best game ever made? Empire's review certainly thinks so — it's at least an "easy contender for the best game of this console generation."

An excerpt from the review, which has since been removed, reads:

"The Last of Us is not just the finest game that Naughty Dog has yet crafted and an easy contender for the best game of this console generation, it may also prove to be gaming’s Citizen Kane moment… a masterpiece that will be looked back upon favourably for decades."

The Last of Us isn't due out until June 14, but a demo for the game is due to launch later today for those who own God of War: Ascension. We don't yet know what the demo will consist of, but if it's the same content as my most recent preview of the game, then you are in for a real treat.

The Last of Us has so far impressed us, but look out for the official GameZone review in early June.
