One of the best indie games of last year is 50 percent off right now on Steam.

FTL: Faster Than Light from Subset Games costs only $5 for the next 16 hours. The strategy-space sim gives players control of a spaceship and puts them on the run through the galaxy. Events are randomized, so every playthrough is different, and players must survive battles while commanding crew members to keep the ship in flight.

When you fail the mission, permadeath takes effect, and you start all over. It's extremely fun.

Space, though. That's huge and scary.
