Rumor: Microsoft planning another dashboard update in preparation for next Xbox
In preparation for the next Xbox, Microsoft is rumored to be releasing another dashboard update for the current Xbox 360. Sources "familiar with Microsoft's Xbox plans" have told The Verge that a public beta for the new dashboard will go live in "late June or early July."
In addition to a "refreshed user interface," Microsoft is supposedly tinkering with smaller Live Titles and possibly looking at darker or lighter themes for the Xbox dashboard. Microsoft is hoping to create a smooth transition for current Xbox users when upgrading to the next-gen Xbox. The goal seems is for next-gen Xbox users to be able to interact with existing Xbox 360 users using messaging, beacons, and achievements.
This update will also remove the use of Microsoft Points, the current virtual currency used to purchase Xbox 360 games, add-ons, and other virtual goods through the Xbox Marketplace. It's expected that cash options and gift cards will replace Microsoft Points.
The final update, should the public beta testing go according to schedule, is set to go live in August. In the meantime, the next-gen Xbox is set to be unveiled on Tuesday, May 21st.
