NewsMinecraft: Xbox 360 edition outsells its PC counterpart in 2012
If we’ve told you once, we’ve told you a million times – a million more than the amount of copies this game’s actually sold, probably – Minecraft is an absolute thrilling experience. Having experienced monumental success on PC/Mac, Mojang and Microsoft locked arms, along with 4J Studios, and set out to recapture the game on the Xbox LIVE Arcade, and in 2012 Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition proved to be a worthy partner, having outsold its PC relative by nearly one million copies this past year.
Sure, Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition’s Christmas Day sales were impressive enough, having raked in 100,416 new players in comparison to the PC’s 70,808, but today Mojang revealed that the 360 edition sold 5, 002,370 copies in 2012 compared to the PC’s 4,177, 843. Now, it should be noted that the PC version has been out much longer and has sustained itself quite nicely, hoisting a lifetime sales mark of over 8 million, but the fact that the 360’s “little brother” has taken off this drastically is a whole other mark of success for Mojang and 4J Studios.
Oh, and we should also mention that the “Pocket Edition” of Minecraft, aimed directly at the mobile market, has topped 5,899,727 copies sold in 2012. So, by our calculations, Minecraft generated over 15 million new players in 2012 – and with no signs of slowing down.
