Microsoft has sold over 70 million units of the Xbox 360 since its debut in 2005, the company revealed yesterday night.
From July to September 2012 (Q1 of the 2013 fiscal year), 1.7 million were sold alone — down from 2.3 million the same time last fiscal year.
Revenue also decreased by 24 percent to $418 million "due mainly to lower volumes of consoles sold and lower video game revenue, offset in part by higher Xbox Live revenue."
The Xbox 360 is the top-selling console in the U.S., according to Microsoft, with a 49 percent market share. Xbox Live members are up 15 percent. Although Microsoft didn't provide an updated number, that total seems to hang around 46 million, compared to the 40 million of last fiscal year.
But the console still places second in the overall current-gen console race: Nintendo sold 96.56 million Wiis at the end of June, and Sony pushed 63.9 million PlayStation 3s at the end of March 2012.
Since Q1 fiscal 2012, Microsoft has increased research and development costs by 44 percent to $140 million — a sign that next-gen console development from Microsoft is on its way.
