Since its release two weeks ago, Guild Wars 2 has sold more two million copies worldwide, publisher NCsoft announced today.

It may not seem like a large number considering the anticipation of the game prior to launch, but one has to consider that the milestone was achieved despite the game being unavailable for much of that span. Just two days after its official August 28th launch, NCsoft and developer ArenaNet decided to halt first-party sales of the eagerly awaited MMO to set up additional servers and improve the player experience for its initial wave of players.

Sales for Guild Wars 2 re-opened earlier this week and soon after surpassed the two million sales mark. Peak concurrency for Guild Wars 2 regularly exceeded 400,000 players.

"Reactions from around the world justified the time and care we put into developing Guild Wars 2 and making it into the game it is today", said ArenaNet president Mike O'Brien. "And this is only the beginning. We're continually fine-tuning the game to deliver the polished experience that our players expect, and we’re already working on new adventures and experiences to introduce into this truly dynamic online world."

Although these initial sales numbers are impressive, Guild Wars 2 still has a ways to go to catch up to its predecessor. The original Guild Wars and its add-ons collectively sold more than 6 million copies. With sales of Guild Wars 2 now back on track, I'd expect equally, if not better, numbers. That is if the sales break didn't calm the initial excitement of potential players.
