'Beverly Hills Cop' tv show would follow Axel Foley's son

It's impossible to talk about Beverly Hills Cop and not hear the theme song in your head. In 1984, Eddie Murphy starred as Detroit police office Axel Foley in the comedy/action movie Beverly Hills Cop. Between then and 1994, there were two sequels and the series made more than $735 million at the global box office.

What's next for the series? Well Eddie Murphy is planning to bring Beverly Hills Cop as a tv show. It looks like that is getting closer to being a reality, as The Shield creator Shawn Ryan has joined the project and is trying to get Sony Pictures Television to produce it. While Murphy would oversee the show as executive producer, what does that mean for his character Axel Foley? Would Foley be recast? Would he not even be in it?

It looks like Murphy doesn't intend to star in the show as Axel Foley. Instead, the tv show would see Foley as the Chief of Police for Detroit, or at least a senior policeman, with the show following his son as the main character. Murphy said last year, "What I'm trying to do with Beverly Hills Cop is produce a tv show starring Axel Foley's son, and Axel is the chief of police in Detroit. I'd do the pilot, show up here and there." So we'd at least see Murphy reprise the role sometimes.

Vulture has said that the show is being pitched to networks as an hour-long police procedural with strong comedic elements... which I picture to be the police version of Scrubs. Enough action and emotional moments to offset the comedy.

Are you at all hyped to see Beverly Hills Cop on tv? And if so, do you want to see Eddie Murphy in it regularly, or would you rather have it focus on Axel Foley's son? Sound off in the comments below.
