NewsAll Injustice: Gods Among Us DLC data will be downloadable for everybody
NeatherRealm, the developer of popular fighting franchise Mortal Kombat, is looking to change how games handle DLC with their upcoming game Injustice: Gods Among Us.
Their new DC superhero themed fighting game will have DLC, but NeatherRealm is changing the way they handle treating players who decide not to purchase it. Whereas most fighting games won't allow you to fight against DLC characters if you don't own them, Injustice will solve this by simply pushing all the extra character data to all formats and players.
In short, this means that regardless of whether you decide to purchase or skip buying an extra DLC character, you won't be forbidden from fighting against them in multiplayer matches.
"In Mortal Kombat we had downloadable characters," NetherRealm boss Ed Boon told Eurogamer. "We want to come up with a way to push all that information onto people's machines so if I buy some character that was available for download, you would have it on your machine and I would be able to fight against you online."
A lot of games, the most notable being Capcom's Street Fighter x Tekken, have received a lot of flack from consumers for shipping with character DLC locked on the disc. NeatherRealm is looking to avoid a similar situation by having all DLC be downloadable.
“We’re coming up with a great automated system to make sure I can use my character against anybody and everything’s compatible," he added. "All of the DLC stuff will be downloadable. We're not going to have it on the disc already and you unlock it. We want to make sure we get it onto people's machines."
While it's important to be honest about DLC, NeatherRealm is still in the process of revealing its initial character roster. Most recently they confirmed Catwoman as a playable character. Injustice: Gods Among Us is set for release in 2013 for Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii U.
