Raccoon City gets patched to how it should've been at launch

Is anyone playing Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City anymore? Operation Raccoon City released on March 20 of 2012 to less than stellar reviews. The game was a mess and anyone that bought it pretty much paid to play-test it for bugs. Here we are three months later, and we finally get a patch that gets rid of a bunch of the bugs. Better late than never, right?

Here are some of the things that the patch clears up:

  • Improved matching. Easier to connect and added each user's NAT info to main menu for easier troubleshooting
  • Matchmaking from invite improved
  • Ally AI improved
  • Enemy AI and responses improved
  • Adjusted various elements of weaponry, including ammo count, knockdown distance, weapon respawn times, etc.
  • Improved aiming/fire accuracy
  • Items can be picked up while dashing
  • Infinite CQC combo addressed (can't string together endless attacks)
  • Players can take cover immediately following a dive
  • Also a fair number of bugs addressed

I didn't review Operation Raccoon City, but the biggest problem for me with the game was definitely the AI, especially your squadmates. So it's good to see them address that area of the game so heavily. On Metacritic, Operation Raccoon City received an average Metacritic score of 52 from critics/publications, and 51 from users. The highest it got was a 7.5 (from the likes of Destructoid), while IGN, Eurogamer, and Joystiq each gave it a 4/10. Our reviewer at GameZone gave it a 6.5/10.

What's disappointing about all of this is that it took three months to patch the game to get it to how it should've been at release, but they had the time to get Day One DLC ready for the game. Promised release features were also bumped into DLC, and all of it points to a rushed release. It's nice to see Slant Six and Capcom fix the things that definitely needed fixing, but are enough people still playing at this point? Maybe it will cause previous skeptics of the game to go out and give it a whirl, or having owners revisit it.
