E3 2012: Assassin's Creed 3 Liberation coming to the PS Vita

Assassin's Creed 3 will be headed to the PlayStation Vita, but it may not be the title we once thought.  Rather than a direct port of console game set to release later this fall for Xbox 360 and PS3, the PS Vita will be getting an entirely separate game titled Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation.

Featured in the latest issue of GameInformer, according to a NeoGAF user, Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation will feature a female assassin who goes by the name Aveline.  It appears as if the game will be set in the same time period of Assassin's Creed 3 - during the years 1765-1780 (around the French and Indian War).  However, this story will take place in New Orleans and apparently have no connection to Desmond, though I predict some connections with the console game will be made.  Liberation will also take players across the Gulf into Mexico.

Details about the story are vague, but right now but it appears as if Aveline's mentor will be an escaped slave named Agate, who is the leader of the assassins in New Orleans.  According to the post, the game has been released as a "propaganda tool by Abstergo, who want players to experience a gray area of the Assassin/Templar conflict as an Assassin rather than a Templar."

Remember the recent Assassin's Creed 3 trailer that showed Connor taking on a bear?  Well, it looks like his Vita counterpart will be tackling wildlife creatures like alligators who "hide beneath murky waters."

Developed by Ubisoft Sofia, the Vita game will have "true Assassin's Creed gameplay" and a multiplayer experience "specifically tailored to the Vita experience".  That being said, you will still be able to explore large gameplay areas through traditional Assassin's Creed-style parkour.

With E3 set to begin tomorrow with press conferences, I'm sure we'll hear more from either Ubisoft or Sony. Seeing as how we're on our way there now, we'll be sure to get you all of the details.  I'm literally writing this on the flight to L.A. (Virgin for the win!)
