Activision reveals story and game modes for Call of Duty: Black Ops II

Today Activision shared a few details about the recently announced Call of Duty: Black Ops II, scheduled to release for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC on November 13.

The game is set in the year 2025, propelling players into a Cold War-like conflict whose origins budded from today's world events. The turmoil has led to advanced developments of weaponry, robotics, and drone warfare.

"Hands down, this is the most ambitious Call of Duty ever," said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision. "We're pushing the boundaries technologically, graphically, and from a narrative and gameplay perspective. At the same time, we need to stay true to the epic realism, authenticity, heart pumping adrenaline, and cinematic action that so many people love and expect from a Call of Duty game."

Mark Lamia, studio head of developer Treyarch, confirmed three modes: a single-player campaign, Zombies, and multiplayer.

"In the campaign, we are creating a thought-provoking story that introduces branching storylines and meaningful choices that impact the narrative," he said. "Running in the multiplayer engine for the first time, Zombies gives players a bigger and more diverse set of gameplay experiences, as well as entirely new ways to wage war with the undead. And in multiplayer, we're embracing all skill levels and play styles to give players more ways to engage."

Black Ops II will also feature "deep integration" with the Call of Duty Elite service.

In 2010, Call of Duty: Black Ops broke the record for biggest entertainment launch, raking in $360 million in its first 24 hours.
