Imagine a world in which every student in school uses an iPad.  No more paper, no more pencil.  If I had asked you to dream of this future about 10 years ago, you'd call me crazy.  But after hearing Apple's remarks about the education system's growing interest in the iPad tablet, it may not seem so unrealistic anymore.

"The education market's interest in iPad continues to grow," Apple's Peter Oppenheimer, senior VP and Chief Financial Officer, boasted during Apple's Q2 2012 financial results call.

"In the March quarter we sold more than 2 iPads for every Mac to our U.S. K12 customers, while also generating a record quarter for Mac sales."  For the record, Apple sold 4 million Macs during the quarter, a 7% increase over the year-ago quarter.

Apple revealed the San Diego school district purchased 10,000 iPads in the March quarter, with plans to purchase 15,000 more in the June quarter for middle and high school programs.

"The San Diego school district purchased 10,000 iPads in the March quarter and plans to purchase 15,000 more in the June quarter for middle school and high school programs.

"iPad continues to open doors to new customers with whom Apple had previously no relationship," Oppenheimer concluded.  "As we enter the K12 institution buying season, we're hopeful that iPad will be a popular choice."

Apple reportedly sold 11.8 million iPads during the Q2 2012 quarter, a 151% increase over the year-ago quarter.
