Baldur's Gate returns this summer with a dual enhanced edition

The countdown on the Baldur's Gate website reached zero today, revealing that Atari, Wizards of the Coast, and Overhaul Games are working on an enhanced edition of Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II.

Baldur's Gate shook the RPG landscape first in 1998 and then again in 2000 with a sequel. Both games received expansion packs—Tales of the Sword Coast for the original title and Throne of Bhaal for the second game, titled Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn. Ideally the upcoming Enhanced Edition, scheduled for release this summer, would pack in all this content and possibly more.

The games were originally published for PC and Mac, but the two subsequent Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance games brought the series to consoles. Hopefully we can expect the same convenience and variety from this year's release.

The announcement assured that the new version would "remain true to the spirit of the game."

On hiatus since its last entry in 2004, the franchise could use a comeback.
