This morning I picked up my copy of Street Fighter X Tekken for the PlayStation 3. I got that version for two reasons. The first is that I don't own an Xbox 360, so it would be stupid for me to buy that version of the game with nothing to play it on. The second reason is that the PlayStation 3 version of Street Figher X Tekken comes with five exclusive characters, which pretty much means I would have gotten that version even if I did own an Xbox 360.

Unfortunately, there's another little quirk plaguing the Xbox 360 iteration of Capcom's crossover fighter. Apparently, Scramble Mode, which normally allows up to four players to duke it out, can't be played online with two local players on one console. Total bummer! What that means is that, if you own the Xbox 360 version of Street Fighter X Tekken, you really can't enjoy this mode online because you and a pal can't get together and take on other players through Xbox Live.

What makes this whole deal so confusing is that it was stated in the game's manual (people still read those, it seems) that two local players actually could engage in online Scramble matches. According to Capcom's Christian Svensson, this was merely a typo in the instruction booklet. That really sucks, and it's a shame that Xbox 360 gamers can't play what is an otherwise pretty cool addition to the game.

Svensson went on to say that while the PlayStation Network allows players to "mix and match", Xbox Live doesn't. While I can kind of see how the whole online system's framework may be an issue, it still doesn't make much sense, because as Joystiq put it, local players could go online in last year's Mortal Kombat, so it's odd that such a feature would be omitted from Street Fighter X Tekken.

It doesn't seem like Capcom will be releasing a patch for this, which is a total shame. Well, at least the game is still really freakin' awesome.
