NewsNon-Capcom Fighters going big at MLG Winter Championships
MLG’s Adam Apicella announced on twitter that Soul Calibur V and The King of Fighters XIII will be joining Mortal Kombat at Winter Championships on March 23-25th. Each game will be played on PS3 and has a total prize pool of $16,700. This is interesting, as no Capcom games are being featured at MLG, echoing the bad blood between the two companies and how Capcom has been treated in the past (Shoved into a corner of an event with little to no exposure). Looks like MLG is out to rectify its previous errors.
Here is the prize breakdown for the events:
1st = $6,000
2nd = $3,600
3rd = $2,400
4th = $1,600
5th/6th = $1,000
7th/8th = $550
That's a decent chunk of change for a fighting game, though it still pales in comparison to recent Starcraft events. This also shares a weekend with another major fighting game tournament, NorCal Regionals, where the major draw is not only a cash prize but EVO points, a system used to seed players into the Evolution Championships in July. Which will players go to? My bet is on the dollar signs, but what do you guys think? Leave a comment and let us know!
