Thanks to Steam's beta functionality, Bethesda is giving PC users an early look at The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim 1.4 update that's currently in development.  Last week, Bethesda released the change-log for the 1.4 update for all three platforms and updated PC users on the status of the Creation Kit and Steam Workshop, announcing it was "nearly ready".

Of course, the patch is still in development, which means there could be some problems with it.  Bethesda warns users to "apply the update at their own risk and only if you are affected by issues listed in the fix notes."

As a precaution, be sure to back up your saved games and be sure not to overwrite your existed Skyrim save files. If you do decide to opt out of the beta program, your old saves still work with the Skyrim 1.3 release.

To get the beta, you need to do the following:

  1. Log into Steam
  2. Click on Steam in the upper menu
  3. Select Settings
  4. Under the Account tab, go to the Beta Participation section and select Change.
  5. A drop down menu will appear. Select Skyrim Beta.
  6. Select OK.
  7. Steam will now restart. After Steam restarts, Skyrim will be updated to the Beta version currently available.

Bethesda has encouraged users for feedback on the beta update, using their beta forum.
