Nintendo 3DS sells 1.5 million units during December 2011 in Japan

If there is one thing Sony should take away from Nintendo it's that they should ignore the PlayStation Vita's slow start.  After stumbling out of the launch gate, the Nintendo 3DS has posted strong sales numbers to finish out the 2011 year.

The 3DS performed so well that it set a new single-month sales record.  According to Sankei New (via Andriasang), the Nintendo 3DS broke Enterbrain's monthly sales record in December – totalling 1,492,931 units sold last month.  That number is the highest single-month sales total recorded since Enterbrain began tracking sales back in 1997.

In comparison, the recently released PlayStation Vita finished second for December with 402,794 units sold.  It's a number that many hoped would be higher, but judging from the 3DS, it's not something people should be worried over.

The 3DS faltered in its launch, only to top the monthly Japan charts for seven months in a row.  The Nintendo 3DS recently passed the four million sales mark in the United States.  In addition to hardware sales in the U.S., both Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land became the first 3DS games to sell 1 million units each in the United States.
