It's Official: Fumito Ueda Has Left Sony

Posted by: David Sanchez

Rumors regarding The Last Guardian creator Fumito Ueda's position at Sony have been buzzing for about two weeks now. At first, it was all water cooler gossip that we thought may or may not be valid. Then we were thrown a curveball when Ueda himself tweeted about Ico and The Last Guardian. There was also the actual departure of Producer Yoshifusa Hayama last week, as well.

Well, we now have confirmation that the head of Team Ico has most definitely left Sony. In a statement to Gamasutra, the company confirmed Ueda's departure.

How will this affect the development of Team Ico's highly anticipated fantasy game? According to Sony, Ueda is still on board with the project and will be working in a freelance capacity. The company went on to say that he was still "committed to completing" The Last Guardian. I would certainly hope so, as this is a game plenty of PlayStation 3 owners are eagerly looking forward to.

Ueda has been with Sony since 1997, so his decision to leave is certainly interersting. Still no word on why he chose to resign from his position, but rumors have been swirling that Ueda is planning on working on more personal projects. Whatever the reasons may be, let's hope the future is bright for this developer, and let's hope we continue to see more grand, majestic titles from him.
