NewsGears of War Movie: Hell to Limbo – Upgrade?
If you’ve been following this Gears of War movie deal since 2007, you know it really hasn’t gone anywhere. Things like the rumored director Len Wiseman abandoning the project, story edits, and less budget have all come into play the four years.
Cliff Bleszinski, design director for Epic Games, spoke to GameFront at E3 about progress on the Gears of War movie:
It’s in development hell right now. Who knows what’ll happen. It took however many years for Peter Jackson to make Lord of the Rings. Hollywood is a complicated beast. There’s all sorts of weirdness going on with who’s working on it, what’s going on here and there. But, hopefully it happens. Maybe the Gears 3 success will generate more interest in it. I’d love to see it. I’d rather have a movie that’s great and true to the franchise, than a movie that sucks. I’d rather not have a movie, than a movie that sucks.
I couldn’t agree more with the concept not having a movie rather than a movie that sucks possibly putting a stigma on game’s image and reputation. It seems like this is a popular trend among game companies and their potential movie deals – such as Ubisoft and an Assassin’s Creed film.
In the recent interview with Cliff Bleszinski at the 2011 Video Game Awards, he seemed to have a slightly more positive but similar outlook on a Gears movie. He told reporters, captured by GamerLive.TV, that “It’s still in a little bit of a movie development limbo right now. But hopefully with the success of 3 we’ll see it kind of poke back up.” This sounds like Bleszinski is still willing if the right deal comes along.
So from development hell to development limbo seems like a step in a positive direction for the production of a possible Gears of War movie. What is next for this movie idea is unknown. It seems like either conditions will be perfect by Epic Games’ standards or the movie will never happen. That is comforting.
