Final Fantasy XIII-2 is due to launch in Japan in just a month's time, with a North American release slated for March. It seems that Destructoid recently caught up with Producer Yoshinori Kitase, and asked about the possibility of a Final Fantasy FPS. Apparently, Kitase is a fan of the genre, and having been responsible for Dirge of Cerebus, the gun-centered action game starring FFVII's Vincent, it seems he might be the one to get it done.

"There is always a possibility that we may end up with a first-person shooter FF" Kitase said, explaining that the future of the Final Fantasy IP is not set in stone. "Having said that, XIII and XIII-2 are much faster action-adventure-inspired games. RPG elements, such as strategical actions, still need to be there (...) I can't visualize it being completely an FPS shooting game. The strategic element needs to be maintained in any future project, because otherwise, it wouldn't be FF anymore."

So, an FPS with RPG elements? It's been done before, but traditionally we've seen FPS developers jamming XP points and weapon upgrades into Western-focused titles. An FPS helmed by the biggest name in Japanese fantasy RPGs? That's be a hell of a sight to see.
