The Nintendo 3DS has proven to be a major flop for Nintendo, who a few months ago dropped $80 from the price tag in an attempt to move units, and now plans to release an awkward new analog-stick attachment to make up for the console's design flaws. Though these tactics seem to have had some effect, it seems clear that the console's biggest problem has been the lack of solid 3DS titles available for sale. Now, this theory has been proven by Super Mario 3D Land, which has actually doubled the number of 3DS units sold this week.
According to Japanese sales data company Media Create, Nintendo has sold 145,271 3DS units during the first week of Super Mario 3D Land’s release, more than twice the number sold last week – 65,041. The new Mario title is the best-selling game in Japan right now, with the 343,492 copies sold putting it far ahead of Uncharted 3 (124,989) and Battlefield 3 (123,379).
Obviously a Mario title is a guaranteed best-seller, though whether it will be enough to push the handheld over the top remains to be seen. Already the 3DS faces its strongest competition from the smartphone market, and with the Playstation Vita launching early 2012, Nintendo could use some more Mario, and soon.
