Dragons in Skyrim "Appear Every Once in a While"
We've already learned that the bones of slain dragons will stay behind in Skyrim, and that you'll be able to loot their corpses.
Dragons are an integral part in the new Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, with players slaying them to obtain dragon souls, which are used to learn words of power in Dragon Shouts. But just how common will these dragons be? Will you be slaying dragons every five minutes and leaving dragon bone graveyards everywhere?
When asked in an interview by PC Gamer "When you're not doing the main quest, how common is it for you to run into a dragon?" game director Todd Howard sort of answered how many dragons players will encounter.
"It's hard to quantify it," he replied. He continued, "They appear every once in a while. Not at a rate that is annoying... it still feels special. It's hard to know how people will play the game and it's a little bit random."
I think that's the key point - making each encounter with a dragon feel special, and not like you're grinding mobs for dragon souls. Dragon fights are supposed to be epic, at least judging from the latest slew of commercials. If you have dragons appearing every five minutes then you lose that sense of an epic boss battle.
As far as how long players will have to wait to see their first dragon, Howard said, "You have to do a little bit of the main quest - just the initial stuff - for dragons to really start appearing, because it sits in with the story. After that point, the more of hte main quest you do, the more dragons you'll run into."
Skyrim is set to 11/11/11 on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3
