If you were looking forward to creating your very own Mega Man levels and dropping the iconic video game hero into some crazy stages, you can erase that from your to-do list. Mega Man Universe has officially been canceled. Capcom made the announcement earlier today on their website, stating that “various reasons” were the cause of the cancellation. Sack Boy, you can breathe a sigh of relief–no one’s going to steal your audience after all.
Capcom didn’t reveal what their “various reasons” were for canceling the upcoming build-your-own-platformer game, but the news is unexpected. From what I read on numerous comment and forum boards, many gamers were eagerly anticipating the game, though others couldn’t have cared less. I’ve only played a few Mega Man games myself, but I was looking forward to this game’s digital release. I’m not too keen on creating my own content in these types of games, but I definitely enjoy downloading and playing through levels designed by others.
Many fans are probably hoping the game resurfaces later, but this likely won’t happen. Maybe Capcom can focus on making Mega Man 11 instead, or possibly bring the series to the 3DS. It will be interesting seeing where the company takes the series after canceling such a promising endeavor.
It looks like Mega Man fanatics will have to wait a bit longer to play the next installment, whatever that may be. What are your thoughts on the cancellation? Were you hoping to play Mega Man Universe? Are you glad the game has been axed? Let us know.
