New Smash Bros. Probably Not Coming Soon

It’s a good thing Super Smash Bros. Brawl is such a good game, because we’ll probably be playing it for some time. According to director Masahiro Sakurai, we probably won’t get a new entry in Nintendo’s famed fighting franchise anytime soon. As a matter of fact, the game doesn’t seem to be in the works, or even seriously discussed for that matter.

Speaking to NowGamer, the Smash Bros. director specified that his efforts were primarily geared toward the development of Kid Icarus: Uprising. That said, Sakurai did state that the Smash Bros. series is still something he thinks about, and he seems to have some vision for the next installment. “I will think about this once Kid Icarus is complete, but as it is a game of a competitive nature, I do not think that any one person should have an advantage.”

Sounds to me like Sakurai is looking to balance the characters a bit more in the next iteration of Smash Bros. That’s great news, especially since I tend to play as Bowser, who’s considered one of the lower tier characters. (Even then, I can still kick some serious ass with the King of the Koopas!) Additionally, Sakurai stated that there were several aspects of the series that could use some improvement. Of course, he didn’t specify, so we’ll have to wait to hear more about the future of Smash Bros. once Kid Icarus: Uprising has launched.

Smash Bros. has become an adored fighting franchise due to its stellar gameplay and non-traditional rules. Knowing that Sakurai wants to bring some improvements to what is already a great series is certainly something worth getting stoked about. I think I speak for my fellow smashers when I say I can’t wait to learn more about the next entry in the series.
