GTA IV Nearing 20M Shipped, GTA Franchise at 100M
Take-Two has revealed important numbers regarding GTA IV and their other major franchises. The figures were unveiled during a talk at the Wedbush Morgan Technology, Media and Telecommunications conference yesterday, March 9.
The latest iteration of the GTA series, GTA IV, has sold nearly 20 million units according to Take-Two chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick. It's no surprise, really, considering the game sits atop the Metacritic rankings and GameZone awarded it a big fat 10, but what's impressive is that the game sold 20 million copies in three years—a lot faster than it took GTA: San Andreas.
The GTA franchise as a whole has shipped over 100 million. That's a pretty exclusive club, and only six other franchises have hit that milestone: Need for Speed, FIFA, The Sims, Tetris, Pokemon, and Mario. How much will the probable next installment influence that figure? Enough to topple The Sims, currently sitting pretty at 125 million?
Additional data distributed by Zelnick reveal that Midnight Club has shipped nearly 18 million units and Max Payne has hit 7 million. Take a look at the full Take-Two presentation, which contains a lot of numbers and charts, here.
