Final Fantasy XIV Delayed on PS3

Originally slated for a March 2011 release, Square Enix has announced that the PlayStation 3 version of Final Fantasy XIV has been delayed due to quality concerns. No new date has been set, though PlayStation 3 owners will be getting a highly refined version of the critically lambasted MMO, thanks to user feedback.

Early adopters on the PC are also getting an extended trial period while the developer rapidly attempts to plug all the holes on their sinking product.

"Since the launch of the Windows PC version," a Square Enix spokesperson said, "we have taken a number of actions based on user feedback to provide them a better game experience including a major version update in late November. In addition, we have decided to extend the free trial period until after we can confidently present customers with a plan outlining a level of enjoyment that will satisfy both us and our customers."

Obviously, Final Fantasy XIV is a huge embarrassment. After Final Fantasy XI and years of experience and user feedback, you'd think the team on XIV would have knocked it out of the park, but what they instead released one of the year's biggest duds.

Still, it's nice to see Square Enix showing commitment to turning things around and if the PlayStation 3 version needs to be delayed, then so be it. I was going to wait until several expansion packs anyway, since MMOs are never great until they've been out for a while anyway.
