Dead Island Logo Censored by ESRB

The North American box art for the upcoming first-person zombie-themed shooter from Deep Silver and Techland is getting a slight alteration. The ESRB deemed the original logo for Dead Island (which featured a hanging corpse) unsuitable, and quickly had it replaced. The new logo now sports a walking zombie instead.

I think the new logo is decent enough, though the dark nature of the original is more unsettling (in a good, thrilling sort of way) and way more awesome. Thankfully, the old logo hasn't been done away with entirely. Though the ESRB censored the image, the original hanging corpse will still be seen in the logo within the game itself.

The ESRB addressed the situation and told IGN, "The video game industry has set guidelines about the types of content that are appropriate in advertising and marketing material, which includes game box art. According to those guidelines the depiction in the logo was not compliant."

As mentioned, the ESRB allowed the in-game logo to remain unchanged, but stated that box art was a more sensitive issue since it is out in the open for all consumers to see. "We never censor or dictate in any way what type of content can be included within a game. However, a game's marketing materials are seen by an audience that is much broader than that which actually purchases the game itself, so we enforce industry-adopted guidelines as to what is suitable for inclusion in these materials."

As for the edgy box art, it's a shame that the hanging corpse was removed from the Dead Island logo. This proves that censorship is still a problem in the video game industry. There are likely to be plenty of gamers angry with this decision. What are your thoughts on the new logo? Like it? Hate it? Has the latest bit of censorship got you frustrated?
