IGN Game Boy Best of 2004 Awards

Another year gone, another several dozen Game Boy Advance games for handheld gamers to enjoy. This year the Game Boy Advance market was much more subdued with the revelation of two new huge portable kits set to take the scene, Sony making its move into the market and Nintendo holding its ground with a second entry called the Nintendo DS.

With the Nintendo DS only a month old and barely enough games to count on two hands, we thought we'd focus only on the Game Boy Advance for the portable games of the year. Next year, though, watch out: both PSP and Nintendo DS will be taking a much stronger position in the market, and we'll have to give proper respect to these systems and their strong libraries for the 2005 awards.

Best Multiplayer Game

Ultimate Card Games Publisher: Telegames | Developer: Cosmigo

Why it Rocked: Videogame versions of card games are certainly nothing to get entirely excited about. That is, unless of course, these card games are in one of the most well-produced game designs for the Game Boy Advance. There are literally dozens of different games to choose from, and everyone will find their own favorites out of the stack of challenges in the cartridge. But what makes this game truly awesome is its focus on link cable support. Only one copy of the game is required to play multiplayer on different systems, and what's more, owners of the cartridge can send fully playable single-player versions of the game to anyone with a cartridge-free GBA system linked up. Ultimate Card Games' tight focus on the GBA's portability and hardware capabilities, especially its multiplayer support, make it one of the best games of the year...hands down. Runner-Up: Kirby and the Amazing Mirror
