Infinity Ward team chats with fans about Call of Duty
Developers reveal some details about current code and what the first patch may contain
The sound of reveille rang and the members of Infinity Ward formed up under command of Activision. The daily duty called for them to field questions from fan site participants.
For those who don’t know, Call of Duty is a first-person action game which transports players into a movie-like World War II combat experience, as seen through the eyes of ordinary soldiers.
Call of Duty places gamers in battlefield scenarios, featuring scores of soldiers and incredible special effects. Players journey through 24 devastating missions played out through three Allied forces - U.S., British and Russian, all fighting together to defeat the German-led Axis war machine. Along the way, gamers experience the camaraderie and brotherhood of a squad, where each soldier has unique duties, personalities and roles to play as they take on Nazi Germany.
The mIRC chat was hosted by CoD and all questions were relayed through him (or her) to the three Infinity Ward members (known as IW-jRandom, IW-Frustrum and IW-Scrapk).
Much of what was discussed was not overly revealing to those who play the game, although gamers may be interested to know that all of the game play is in the form of scripts so players can experiment with new forms of gameplay, then release their creations to the community. The more popular modes will be brought out in official patches, according to the development team on hand.
The first question asked was were there any plans for mobile or deployable machine guns in the future of CoD.
While the developers would answer yes, they would not provide any details.
CoD: Is there anything you wanted to add to the game but didn’t have time to?
A: Yes, pistols for British and Russians.
CoD: Will the modding side of the community be supported as much as possible?
A: Yes, we are very pro-mod.
IW-jRandom: We need to see some progress with the mods before we extend ourselves.

CoD: Will the dev team ever add co-op to the game?
A: There will probably not be co-op added to this version of the game.
CoD: What sort of development tools, or SDK package will be released for amateur developers to mod with?
IW-Frustrum - We plan to release all of our proprietary tools, including the level editor -model exporter - anim exporter - game asset editor, etc.
CoD: It seems there is only one type of machine gun throughout the entire game. The MG42 is standard across all campaigns and has every side using it. Will you add the .30/.50 cal and the Russian equivalent to the game to make it more accurate.
A: Yes.
CoD: What kind of fixes will the patch include?
A: We are planning to address the bunny hopping issue, sniping issues, grenade spam, and some bugs and other issues. The patch should go into test in the next couple of weeks.
CoD: Are you guys planning on implementing widescreen (16:9 ratio) resolutions in a patch?
A: There are magic cvars to get widescreen working in SP. Set r_mode -1, the set r_custom width and height to your widescreen resolution, then set the fov to account for the widescreen (about 90)
The compass will be stretched a bit - but it works otherwise.
It doesn’t work in MP since fov is cheat protected - so everyone will be stretched.
Cod: Are there plans for a Find-a-Friend feature in the server browser in upcoming patches?
IW-Scrapk: Not currently.
CoD: Will more spawn points be added to the MP maps in order to accommodate servers with over 32 players slots?
A: Yes.

CoD: What was your inspiration to place this game in World War II?
A: We are big fans of the genre. The movies and tv shows are some of our favs. As far as FPS are concerned, it is the best genre for it (in our opinion)
CoD: What was it like to work with Michael Giacchino, and how did you guys like the way the music turned out? Any plans to work with him in future games or expansions?
A: Working with Michael was great and we hope to work with him in the future.
IW-Scrapk - Michael was amazing to work with, he really got into the game and made the music fit exactly the situation at hand. He is an amazing composer. We feel lucky to have been involved with him, and certainly would like to work with him in the future.
CoD: Can we expect any new maps in upcoming patches?
A: Yes.
CoD: Any plans for in-game multiplayer voice chat integration like in DoD?
IW-Scrapk - We don’t have any plans to add it. Programs like Teamspeak work very well with the game currently, so we would rather focus our resources in different places. It is a possibility for future products.
CoD: What are your plans, if any, to balance weapons like grenades, scoped rifles, etc. And if you are in the process of adjusting those weapons, will we see it in the first patch or one following?
A: There will be a weapon tuning pass in the next patch. We are tightening up the kill-boxes, making the sniper rifle slower to bring up the scope and some other things we are trying.

CoD: Is it a possibility that the CPL (Cyber Profession League) will sponsor the game, as they do CD and RTCW and Q3A? Do you see it as being a competitive oriented league/ladder game?
A: We can’t really guess at the future intentions of the CPL. We do see the game as a competitive platform, so I think it would fit well.
IW-jRandom: We specifically made the game to be a competitive multiplayer game.
CoD: Will a future patch include an option to lower/turn off the music (or in my case turn it up over the sound effects)?
A: Are you talking about the MP menu music? Or SP?
CoD: The single player, both menu and in-game ...
IW-Frustrum: The SP is mixed like a movie, so there are no plans to allow music level adjustment.
CoD: Is there (or will there be) Linux server support?
A: Yes - it is currently in test.
IW-Scrapk: There are some Linux test servers online right now
CoD: Are there any plans to implement a territory-based gametype along the lines of Day of Defeat or BF1942, with objectives to capture/defend and reinforcements, etc.?
A: Yes, we are currently testing some. We have developed a new mode which will be in the patch which includes respawning and objectives. It’s not a copy of another game, however.
CoD: Do you plan to edit the weapon damage rates at all in future patches?
A: We will do a balance pass on the first patch.
CoD: Any plans for new weapons aside from the aforementioned Machine guns?
A: Our game asset tool allows for adding completely new weapons without writing any code. We hope to see many weapons from the community.
CoD: Have you guys talked to many/any veterans about their experiences or learned from them prior to or during the development of Call of Duty?
A: We talk to a lot of re-enactors, historians and military consultants. We also read a lot of books, watch a lot of documentaries and movies.
We have a very impressive WWII DVD collection.
A lot of research went into the making of the game.
