Shrek Takes on Microsoft's Xbox: A GZ
Interview
by The Badger
Only days ago Shrek, the most unusual of ogres, made his debut on DVD. Now, he's
taking another huge step and becoming part of gaming history with TDK
Mediactive's Xbox release of an all new Shrek adventure. With unprecedented
graphics, irreverent humor, and mission based 3D action, Shrek for Xbox will
undoubtedly retain the same appeal and charm as the full-length movie release;
enjoyable not only for kids, but for equally free-spirited adults.
If you've seen the movie, you know it's just a little different that your
typical fairy-tale flick. Willaim Steig (the original author) fans have known
about this reluctant hero for some time - and they couldn't have picked a better
ogre to promote to tinseltown. Shrek for Xbox is also bringing quite a few
tricks to the game trade - using never before seen graphical marvels, such as
bump-mapping, to bring a gaming experience that will shake up anything you've
seen before. Working closely with DreamWorks, the team has worked diligently to
not only bring a fantastic looking game, but also one that has all the biting
wit and sarcastic humor that made the movie so appealing.
We got the chance to get some first-hand comments from the Shrek team on the
challenges, objectives, and experiences of the Shrek Xbox team. Do more than
watch the movie, Shrek fans - read this interview and get your hands on this
game!
1. A wide range of age groups enjoyed Shrek, and there was an especially
appreciative reaction from adults. What age range will Shrek for Xbox target?
Playing off of the broad reception of the movie, we have designed the game to
appeal to casual gamers. We think that there is a little something in it for
everybody: humor, wit; top-notch graphics, and fun and challenging gameplay.
2. Will the gameplay be primarily action? How much adventure/other elements
will be included in game play?
The game is a mission based 3D platformer with some fighting elements and a
unique mechanic… or two. The gameplay is primarily focused on fighting enemies
and achieving mission goals such as grabbing 5 of something and getting them to
where they belong or chasing down 8 characters and knocking them out.
3. Other than technical capabilities, how does the Xbox version compare to
other versions released on other platforms?
Shrek is an exclusive title for the Xbox.
4. Can you explain a little more about the concept of “bump-mapping” to
gamers who may not be familiar with the terminology? What other kinds of
“graphical magic” have you been especially excited about working with?
Bump mapping is a technology that allows a 3D surface to appear as though it has
a bumpy or relieved surface without having to model the geometry of each
individual bump or brick or pebble. Thanks to the power of the Xbox we are able
to bump map everything in all of our worlds. Some other points we are very proud
of are, per pixel lighting, real-time volumetric shadows and real-time specular
mapping.
5. What kinds of moves/attacks will Shrek have at his command to complete his
quests?
