Namco Bandai reveals images for monsters in .hack//GU Vol. 1//Rebirth

Screenshots reveal the "faces" of evil

A new group of monsters will dot the horizon of the Namco Bandai game .hack//G.U. Vol. 1// Rebirth, a PS2 title slated for release later in October.

The hit sci-fi fantasy video game and TV series is back to deliver an epic, immersive RPG experience on the PlayStation2 computer entertainment system. What would you - as the player - do if a game impacted your real world? What is reality? .hack has pursued this innovative concept in the previous 4-part series where “The World” was ultimately destroyed. Years after the events of the first .hack series, “The World” was rebuilt. As a new player, you are saved on your first day in “The World” from several PKs (Player Killers) by a mysterious man. From this day on, you have dedicated your time to hunt down PKs, and have become known throughout “The World” as the feared “Terror of Death.” Word in “The World” is that the legendary PK you have been searching for has surfaced, and you must now set out to find “it.” Your world is thrown into chaos when you finally encounter this PK, and are defeated by him…

But there are other obstacles along the way - such as ...

Monsters that are controlled by the Shadow that lurks outside the Root Towns. Most monsters disappeared when the six great spirits and the two goddesses were victorious over the Shadow, but they began to increase in strength after the humans destroyed the gods.

Ogres

Goblin Rookies are goblins that have just been appointed to their duties.  They have not received much training and are unable to guard against enemy attacks.  Their physical abilities are much lower than veteran warriors and are easily defeated.  However, they are still warriors and can easily overpower an adventurer by their sheer numbers.

Gun Giants are monsters with large cannons on their arms. Their blindness allows them to have exceptional hearing. They can detect even the faintest sound from their intended target. Despite their large size, they are agile and can jump up and fire on a large area.

Demon Beasts

Vak Fang are dog-shaped monsters with enormous teeth. They are stray dogs that were abandoned by their owners and transformed into monsters by the power of the Shadow.

They harbor deep anger towards humans who have abandoned them.  Although they seem to be proficient in physical attacks, they are also versatile in magical attacks with the power of the charms that surround their manes.

It was recently discovered by an adventurer that these charms were not created by the Shadow, but instead were placed on them purposely by an individual. The culprit is still unknown at this time and both the Ogmios and the Teutates are investigating.

Demons

Carries are monsters that are always covered by a shell.  They have strong aversion to showing their true form and hold on to their shells even when they are attacking.

It is widely believed that when their shells do get broken, they viciously attack anything around them from the humiliation of showing their faces.  They are very slow when they have their shells still on them, but once the shells are broken, they are very agile and are quick to attack their enemies.

Sea Beasts

The Spear Fish gets its name from the long horn on its forehead and the swimming motion it makes while gliding through the air.

Its elastic horn and skin are favored as alchemy materials. Some adventurers even hunt them exclusively for this purpose.

Supernaturals

Vak Jugglers are created when swords that were left behind on the battlefields are possessed by the souls of dead soldiers. Since they were first inanimate objects, some scholars believe that they should not be considered as a monster.

It is believed that the dead souls do not realize that they are dead, and will stay on this earth until the swords they possessed are broken.  It is also said that it will suck the souls of those who have been struck down by its blade.  Because of this, even seasoned adventurers hesitate to fight this monster.

Plant Beasts

The Crumple Tree is a gigantic monster that looks like a tree stump.  It has a large face on the side and is said to communicate by its facial expression.

Although it has a mouth, it is only used to convey its facial expression and is incapable of speech. Their branches, leaves, and trunks are all used in alchemy. There are virtually no wasted parts on them. It is difficult to tackle this monster by a solo player. It is advised to attack them in a group.

Machine Beasts

Steam Shells are magical weapons that were left behind after being used in the war between humans and beasts.  They were transformed into monsters by the Shadow.

The monster systematically attacks without any emotion. It is one of the most hated monsters by adventurers.  Ogmios have repeatedly requested the Arvakv to take responsibility for the Steam Shells, but so far the Arvakv have evaded answering them and have only said that they are looking into the situation.
