VGPA ANNOUNCES THE “BEST OF THE BEST” FIGHTING TOURNAMENT
AS A PART OF THE MID ATLANTIC VIDEO GAME FESTIVAL.
OXON HILL, Maryland -- August 27, 2002 -- The Video Game Players Association www.vgpa.com announced that its first video game tournament is a part of the Mid Atlantic Video Game Festival to be held in Roanoke, Virginia on Saturday, September 28, 2002. Over 1,000 gamers are expected to challenge themselves and others playing new and vintage games on new and older platforms. The tournament, entitled “The Best of the Best,” will feature five of the most popular best fighting game titles in video gaming history. These games are: Capcom’s Street Fighter 2: Turbo for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System™, Marvel vs Capcom 2 for the Sega Dreamcast, Midway’s Mortal Kombat 2 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System™, Namco’s Tekken 4 for the Playstation™ 2, and Tecmo’s Dead or Alive 3 for the Xbox™. The wide selection of games and platforms in this festival are creating significant buzz within the gaming community.
This tournament will truly be a test for any gamer who participates. Not only will the gamer be paired in a one-on-one match with another gamer, but the sense of nostalgia will be in the air as gamers remember their favorite moves and combos from games that they may not have played for some time.
"The Best of the Best Tournament will not only test one’s skill at the game of the moment, but will also see if the gamer can still conquer on games past. The feel of nostalgia and the heritage of the fighting game genre will be in the air," said Sean Underwood, Sr., President of the VGPA.
Prizes for each game tournament are: VGPA Prize Pack including a Free Game, T-shirt and other goodies for First Place; A VGPA T-Shirt and a free one Year Membership to the VGPA for Second Place; and A free one year membership to the VGPA for Third Place. The format of the tournaments are: Each match will be one-on-one, best two out of three rounds with a 60 second time limit per round. The winners of each match advance towards the final match. After each single game tournament has been played, the final three players from each game will go head to head, with the winners of each game getting a first round bye, until there is a Grand Champion. That Player will be crowned the “Best of the Best” and will receive a trophy and a system (of their choice) and two games.
