Video Game Industry Luminary John Carmack of id Software to Address Guildhall at SMU's First Class of Students
Guildhall is 18-month-long Game Development Certification Program
DALLAS - June 24 - SMU has confirmed that John Carmack, co-founder and technical director of id Software, will address the first class of Guildhall at SMU students on the opening day of classes on July 7. Carmack's welcome will be held on the SMU campus in Dallas at the Meadows Museum. The address is open only to Guildhall students, faculty and members of the press who have contacted the Guildhall in advance. Media representatives who would like to attend or cover this event should contact Robert Bobo at 214/768-7658 or rbobo@smu.edu.
John Carmack is legendary for his brilliance in 3D graphics. A talented programmer with an entrepreneurial spirit, Carmack programs some of the most in-demand and technically advanced 3D graphics engines in the computer gaming industry. These engines are at the heart of all id Software titles - from the innovative Wolfenstein 3D and blockbuster Doom series to the successful Quake titles and the recent hit Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Currently, Carmack and the entire id Software development team are working on DOOM 3, the highly anticipated first person action game that will once again redefine the modern gaming experience.
"We're thrilled to have John Carmack kick off our program," said Dr. Peter Raad, who oversees the Guildhall at SMU as Director of the Hart eCenter at SMU. "John's reputation as someone who consistently unleashes the untapped possibilities of technology to enhance the gameplay experience truly complements what the Guildhall at SMU is committed to -- providing a state-of-the-art education center that enables students to succeed in the rapidly evolving world of game development."
The Guildhall's unique game education program has received extensive national media coverage over the past several weeks - from two different segments broadcast on CNN and a mention in Jay Leno's monologue to references in recent issues of Newsweek and Business Week.
