Hooks or Shurikens? Pick a Side
in Pirates Vs. Ninjas Dodgeball

“I think it’s impossible to try to appeal to everyone. We’re just trying to make a fun, party, alternative sports game that is highly competitive but easily accessible.”
Pirates think they’re so tough, with their mad sword skills and sophisticated, not-too-cool-to-be-drunk attitude. Ninjas are just as bad, sneaking around like some kind of sneaky assassin. Their fans, however, are even crazier, waging fictitious wars against each other to determine which one is superior. In Pirates Vs. Ninjas Dodgeball, players can finally take out their wooden leg-wearing, ninja star-throwing anger on a plasma via Xbox Live Arcade.
“Our version of Dodgeball is not
based on traditional rules,” said Chris Stockman, Studio Director at Blazing
Lizard, Inc. “Players have complete freedom to move around the court and attack
one another with everyone having the same goal of trying to hit each other with
the Dodgeball.”

Pirates are (sometimes) skilled swordsmen, ninjas are known for being quick and agile. Were these or any other familiar traits taken into account when developing the game?
Chris Stockman: Absolutely! Each team has their own stats and abilities that are fundamental to the overall balance of the game. Ninjas, for example, are fast and have lots of stamina vs. Pirates who are slower and become tired more easily.
Are there going to be any special moves/super powers?
CS: Each character has their own unique special ability that can be used to help recover the ball, stun their opponents, or even provide a temporary buff. Using special abilities is absolutely crucial to winning a match!
How are the multiplayer modes going to differ between the PS2, Wii and Xbox 360 versions?
CS: We’ve only announced the
360 version so far!

It's tough having a story mode in a sports game. On one hand it could provide stellar value for solo gamers – but more of than not it ends up being a disaster. What measures are being taken to ensure Pirates Vs. Ninjas Dodgeball defies the norm?
CS: Our story mode provides anywhere from 6 – 10 hours of gameplay based on skill level. Each team has their own unique story told you comical 2D cutscenes presented before and after each match.
Obviously we know that Pirates and Ninjas are on board. But can you tell us, if only a hint, who the other three teams might be?
CS: Sure we have already announced our remaining two teams, which are Zombies and Robots.
What are the themes of the six arenas?
CS: We are actually shipping four arenas with the game. The other two will be DLC.
The arena names are: Booty Island,
Fuji Forest, The Crypt, and Fear Factory.

Can the arenas be used to enhance a dodgeball move?
CS: Yeah, some arenas have ramps and whatnot to allow for some serious air time. Others have various cover scattered about that can be used to deflect the Dodgeball.
One of the most common things I hear developers say is that they've got to make the game fun for "everyone," not just fans of the property. But honestly – can a game truly be fun for everyone?
CS: I think it’s impossible to try to appeal to everyone. We’re just trying to make a fun, party, alternative sports game that is highly competitive but easily accessible.
Pirates Vs. Ninjas Dodgeball… What's next, synchronized swimming with swans and sumo wrestlers?
CS: All good ideas! I never thought of PvN: Synchronized Swimming! Sign us up!
Really? How about Cabals Vs. Cannibals Curling: 2010 Winter Olympics Edition? No? Well, it was worth a shot. Thank you for your time.
