February 25, 2005 – The Splinter Cell Chaos Theory development team has accomplished some pretty amazing feats on the PlayStation 2, and we’ve got the intel to prove it! Check out a selection of new screens that showcase a few of the features that will make many a PS2 gamer’s jaw hit the floor – the game looks that good

And here’s a bit more information about each of these elements, and why they’re so darn special:

GeoTexturing: Special graphics technique that enables the rendering of real 3D surfaces where only 2D surfaces were rendered previously (on other PS2 games) with minor impact on the main CPU and memory. We invented this, and it’s wicked cool.

Dynamic water: The water implemented for the game has been optimized to the point where realistic free water surface movement can be observed. Also, the water reacts like real water if an object is moving or thrown into it. A new powerful water simulator, using special maths, has been programmed for this purpose.

Specular reflection: The specular reflection is the reflection of the light on smooth/rough surfaces. In the game, all surfaces react exactly as in real life: the specular properties change from less specular to more specular (if the surfaces become wet for example) or if you see a floor made of marble. The light is constantly reflected by the surrounding walls, floors, ceilings and objects – and it’s never been done like this on the PS2.

Heat Distortion: Shimmering caused by the light shining through air moving in random motion above a hot surface because of the energy transferred away from the surface through the air.
