Hollywood talent spice up Emperor: Battle for Dune film shoot Filming wraps, post-production continues on Westwood’s first 3D strategy game
LAS VEGAS (January 30, 2000) – Star Trek’s Michael Dorn and a cast of Hollywood stars teamed with Westwood Studios™ to film scenes for the upcoming PC game, Emperor: Battle for Dune™. The real-time strategy game, due out this summer, is part of the EA GAMES™ family of games from Electronic Arts.
Westwood hired top Hollywood talent to portray the intriguing and diverse characters in Emperor. Dorn (Star Trek:The Next Generation) portrayed Duke Achillus of House Atreides, Michael McShane (Drop Dead Gorgeous, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves) transformed into the Baron Rakan of House Harkonnen, and Vincent Schiavelli (Ghost, Fast Times at Ridgemont High) played Yanich Kobal, the Baron’s advisor.
The actors spent two weeks in Westwood’s 4000-square foot studio and another week in the sand dunes surrounding Las Vegas to bring the exotic Dune™ universe to life. Editing and post-production will continue through January.
“This costuming and staging with this type of work borders on Shakespeare,” said Michael McShane, who plays Baron Rakan of House Harkonnen. “There’s a lot of high-end language, big emotions and big canvasses of the world. It’s also a beautiful world. They show you the stills that you’re being dropped into and they’re magnificent. Beautiful, beautiful work these guys do at Westwood.”
Emperor: Battle for Dune, a real-time strategy game, features three unique sides, the noble House Atreides, the evil Harkonnen and the insidious Ordos, each with vast armies armed with exotic weapons.
Westwood is adding new depth to the RTS genre with a completely non-linear Planetary Campaign, which features 33 different maps to fight on, and more than 100 missions, each with it’s own twists and turns, benefits and challenges. While battling from territory to territory, working across the planet, Commanders can pull reserve troops from conquered territories, but also might be forced to retreat from territories if his forces are spread too thin.
Westwood released Dune II, the first real-time strategy for the PC, in 1992. It featured the depth of a strategy game combined with the accessibility and intensity of an action game. Dune II became wildly popular. Soon after, the series that evolved and defined the real-time strategy genre was launched, Command & Conquer™. The C&C series went on to sell more than 12 million copies around the world.
